This Week's Homework

Homework #1 · Assigned at Practice #1 (Aug 6)

🍿 Family Movie Night

Watch a baseball movie with your family: The Sandlot, Rookie of the Year, or Angels in the Outfield. That's it. That's the homework.

Bonus points: come to Practice #2 ready to tell the coaches your favorite part.

Every practice ends with a fun assignment — a way for parents to get in on the season too.

15 minutes a day beats 2 hours on Sunday

The Drill Library

Everything here works in a backyard, garage, or living room. Grab a parent, pick a drill — or let the mascot pick for you. Coach videos are on the way.

Hitting ★★☆

Tee Time 20

⏱ 10 min  ·  🧰 Tee, bat, wiffle balls
  1. Set the tee belt-high over the middle of the plate.
  2. 20 swings: focus on a level swing and watching the bat hit the ball.
  3. Last 5 swings: call your shot — left, middle, or right.
Parent tip: Count the good ones out loud. Kids love a scoreboard.

Soft Toss Corners

⏱ 10 min  ·  🧰 Bat, wiffle balls, a helper
  1. Parent kneels to the side and tosses gentle underhand strikes.
  2. 10 swings inside pitch, 10 middle, 10 outside.
  3. Finish with 5 'game swings' — full speed, best form.
Parent tip: Toss slow and consistent. The drill is for the hitter, not the pitcher.

Wall Ball Timing

⏱ 5 min  ·  🧰 Tennis ball, wall
  1. Toss a tennis ball off a wall and catch it barehanded.
  2. Catch 10 righty, 10 lefty, 10 with a clap in between.
  3. Speeds up eyes and hands — the engine of hitting.
Parent tip: Great rainy-day option. Garage doors work fine.

Throwing ★☆☆

Wrist Flip 25

⏱ 5 min  ·  🧰 Ball, glove, partner
  1. Kneel facing your partner about 10 feet apart.
  2. Elbow up, flip the ball using only wrist and fingers — 25 throws.
  3. Focus: ball spins straight back, not sideways.
Parent tip: Watch the spin together. Straight spin = straight throws.

Long Toss Ladder

⏱ 10 min  ·  🧰 Ball, glove, partner
  1. Start 15 feet apart. Every 5 good throws, each take 3 steps back.
  2. Keep going until throws start bouncing — that's the edge.
  3. Finish with 5 throws at a closer distance, hitting the chest every time.
Parent tip: End on accuracy, not distance. Always finish with successes.

Alligator Scoops

⏱ 10 min  ·  🧰 Ball, glove
  1. Roll grounders straight at the fielder from 15 feet.
  2. Feet wide, butt down, glove flat on the dirt — top hand snaps shut like an alligator.
  3. 15 scoops, then 5 moving left and 5 moving right.
Parent tip: Say 'gator!' on every scoop. Silly works — the top hand is the fix.

Short Hop Wall Drill

⏱ 10 min  ·  🧰 Tennis ball, wall, glove
  1. Throw a tennis ball low off a wall so it short-hops back.
  2. Field 20 short hops — glove out front, soft hands, give with the ball.
  3. Count your streak of clean picks. Beat it tomorrow.
Parent tip: Short hops scare kids until they've eaten 100 of them. This is how.

Glove Transfer Race

⏱ 5 min  ·  🧰 Ball, glove, timer
  1. Self-toss, catch, and transfer ball to throwing hand as fast as possible.

Baserunning ★★☆

Home-to-First Burners

⏱ 10 min  ·  🧰 Any two markers 60 ft apart
  1. Set two markers 60 feet apart (or use real bases).
  2. 5 sprints: swing an imaginary bat, drop it (don't throw it!), and burn to first.
  3. Run THROUGH the base — big last step past it, then break down.
Parent tip: Time them. Kids will run through a wall to beat their own time.

Freeze Tag Leads

⏱ 5 min  ·  🧰 Bases or markers
  1. Runner stands on a base; parent is the 'pitcher' with a ball.
  2. Runner shuffles off the base — when the parent turns, FREEZE.
  3. Caught moving = back to the base. Three escapes wins.
Parent tip: Sneaky way to teach paying attention to the ball on the bases.

Film Session: Watch One Inning

⏱ 15 min  ·  🧰 Any baseball game on TV
  1. Watch one inning of any game together — pick one player to 'scout'.
  2. Count: how many times does he move before the pitch even arrives?
  3. Talk about ONE thing: where was he standing? Why did he back up that base?
Parent tip: The game makes more sense when they watch it with a job to do.

Rainy Day ★★☆

Balance Beam Swings

⏱ 5 min  ·  🧰 A line of tape on the floor, bat
  1. Stand on a tape line, feet on the line, and take 10 slow-motion swings.
  2. Fall off the line = restart the count.
  3. Finish with 5 regular-speed swings holding the finish for 3 seconds.
Parent tip: Balance is the quietest superpower in a 7U swing.

Rainy Day ★☆☆

Grip Strength Game

⏱ 5 min  ·  🧰 Tennis ball
  1. Squeeze a tennis ball 20 times each hand while watching TV.
  2. Then hold a squeeze for 10 seconds, 3 times per hand.
  3. Stronger hands = harder hits and truer throws.
Parent tip: Keep a ball in the car. Errand miles become baseball miles.

The off-season challenge

The Outlaw 100 Club

100 swings, 100 throws, 100 grounders — every week of the off-season. That's about 15 minutes a day. Keep a tally on the fridge, and when the season starts, the work shows up in the box score. Members of the 100 Club get called out at the first team practice. No badge is more wanted.
